According to
Variety Jim Broadbent will play Wilbur Turnblad in the upcoming film.
Variety says that New Line Cinema has completed casting for Hairspray, signing Jim Broadbent to play Wilbur Turnblad, the father of lead character Tracy Turnblad.
Broadbent joins John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron and newcomer Nikki Blonsky, who'll play Tracy.
Adam Shankman is directing and Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are producing from Leslie Dixon's script, based on the hit Broadway musical.
The film is set to start principal photography September 5 in Toronto for a Dececember 21, 2007, release.

I guess Billy Crystal was just a rumor, even though his name appeared in many press releases. I wonder what happened there?

*Hairspray's budget, to be in the $75 million range.
*Jerry Mitchell and Jack O'Brien bowed out as co-directors (Daily Variety, June 21, 2005) when the film's schedule was pushed back.
Rob Marshall was offered the job, who ironically once planned to choreograph and direct the stage version of "Hairspray" before he took "Chicago." When Marshall declined to do the film, 15 other directors were interviewed before Adam Shankman was chosen.
*Adam Shankman and Marc Shaiman are no strangers! For 15+ years they have worked together on various projects such as:
