Variety reports that Michelle Pfeiffer has signed on to the play Velma von Tussel in Hairspray.
Additionally, the film has firmed up its production schedule, which has it going before the cameras in September '06 for a December 21, 2007 release. Hairspray won't be Pfeiffer's first major screen role in a musical, she got her on screen start in Grease 2. Later, in 1989, she starred as chanteuse Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. -Broadwayworld.com
The studio has firmed a Sept. 5 start date. Plans to shoot partly in Baltimore have been scrapped, and the film now will shoot entirely in Toronto. Also changed is its launch date; the film has been pushed back to a Dec. 21, 2007 release. New Line cites its crowded summer 2007 schedule as the reason for the move. -Comingsoon.net
A new song will also be written for Pfeiffer.

*Hairspray's budget, to be in the $75 million range.
*Jerry Mitchell and Jack O'Brien bowed out as co-directors (Daily Variety, June 21, 2005) when the film's schedule was pushed back.
Rob Marshall was offered the job, who ironically once planned to choreograph and direct the stage version of "Hairspray" before he took "Chicago." When Marshall declined to do the film, 15 other directors were interviewed before Adam Shankman was chosen.
*Adam Shankman and Marc Shaiman are no strangers! For 15+ years they have worked together on various projects such as:
