ComingSoon.netNew Line Cinema and director Adam Shankman have set High School Musical star Zac Efron to play Link, the hunky heartthrob of "The Corny Collins Show," in the screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Hairspray.
Shankman and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are planning a September 5 start, meaning the 18-year old Efron will have to put other plans on hold. He's been accepted to USC, but will try to defer his enrollment after landing the role.
Nicole Blonsky recently won the role of Tracy Turnblad after a nationwide search. John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes and Brittany Snow co-star in the film, scheduled for a summer 2007 release.Come the new week, I am sure more news will be made available.

*Hairspray's budget, to be in the $75 million range.
*Jerry Mitchell and Jack O'Brien bowed out as co-directors (Daily Variety, June 21, 2005) when the film's schedule was pushed back.
Rob Marshall was offered the job, who ironically once planned to choreograph and direct the stage version of "Hairspray" before he took "Chicago." When Marshall declined to do the film, 15 other directors were interviewed before Adam Shankman was chosen.
*Adam Shankman and Marc Shaiman are no strangers! For 15+ years they have worked together on various projects such as:
"Addams Family Values," "Heart and Souls," "George of the Jungle," "The Out-of-Towners" and "The Wedding Planner."
